How to Measure for Replacement Drawer Slides: Length, Clearance and Travel

Short answer: measure the slide in its closed position, the usable cabinet depth, the drawer and its mounting space. Then compare those measurements with the exact replacement model’s drawing. Matching the old runner’s length alone does not establish fit or load capacity.

A replacement drawer slide can look similar to the original and still need different clearance, fasteners or mounting points. Whether you are repairing a workshop cabinet or planning a storage fit-out, record the geometry before choosing a range. This guide explains what to measure; model-specific instructions determine how to install it.

1. Identify the existing hardware

Record any model number, brand, markings and locking or release features. Photograph both sides and their mounting positions. Check whether the slide is side-mounted, underneath the drawer or attached with brackets; these layouts are not interchangeable.

If access requires removing the drawer, follow the existing hardware’s removal instructions and support the assembly. Empty loose contents first where safe. Do not disconnect a heavy or unstable drawer just to obtain a measurement.

2. Measure closed slide length and usable depth separately

Measure the slide assembly with its moving members fully retracted, using the reference points shown in its drawing where available. Do not substitute the overall open length for the closed length.

Next, record the usable depth of the cabinet at the mounting position. Allow for obstructions such as a rear panel, brackets or components behind the drawer. The drawer box depth is another measurement: record it separately instead of assuming it equals the slide length.

3. Check side clearance at the front and rear

Measure the clear opening between the cabinet’s mounting surfaces and the external width of the drawer box. For a centred, parallel side-mounted arrangement, the difference divided by two gives an initial estimate of the space on each side. Measure the actual left and right gaps as well; an estimate does not reveal an uneven or out-of-square installation.

Repeat the measurements near the front and rear. Compare the results with the replacement model’s specified installation clearance. There is no single clearance figure that can safely be applied to every range.

Your measurement record

Record What it helps establish
Closed slide length Space required when retracted
Usable cabinet depth Whether the selected assembly fits behind the drawer front
Drawer width and actual side gaps Whether mounting clearance matches the selected model
Mounting height and hole positions Whether attachment points and surrounding parts are compatible
Required opening travel Whether the rear contents can be reached

4. Distinguish travel from length

Extension travel describes how far the moving assembly opens. Closed length describes its retracted envelope. Check both in the product drawing, together with any extension classification, before relying on access to the rear of the drawer.

Use a simple mock-up to check reach and nearby obstructions. A door, bench edge or surrounding equipment can limit usable access even when the slide itself has sufficient travel.

5. Match the complete application, not just the dimensions

Record the working weight of the drawer box, contents and attached accessories. Confirm the selected model’s rated conditions, mounting orientation and supported dimensions. Existing holes may not suit the replacement; do not drill, rotate or modify hardware without the applicable instructions.

For mobile storage, assess transport restraint and operating conditions separately. A matching length or a locking mechanism alone does not establish suitability for vehicle use.

Compare DuraSlide options

Once your measurements are recorded, compare the following current product pages. The links identify ranges; confirm the chosen variant’s dimensions, rated conditions and availability before ordering.

Common replacement mistakes

  • Measuring the extended assembly and calling it slide length.
  • Checking cabinet depth but overlooking rear obstructions.
  • Assuming left and right side gaps are equal.
  • Choosing a range rating without checking model-specific conditions.
  • Expecting old mounting holes to match the new slide.

FAQs

Can I replace a slide with another of the same length?

Possibly, but also verify section size, clearance, mounting pattern, travel, load and operating features. Equal length does not make two slides interchangeable.

Should I measure the drawer or the runner?

Record both, plus the cabinet opening and available depth. Each measurement answers a different fitment question.

What if I cannot find the model drawing?

Send DuraSlide photographs, identifying marks and your measurements before ordering. Avoid guessing the clearance or installing a replacement on appearance alone.

Next step

Keep the measurement record and compare it with the intended DuraSlide model. Resolve any missing specification before purchasing, rather than discovering a clearance or mounting mismatch during installation.
